In short: It's NOT a recommended book for Traditional Chinese Character study. There's only about 20 pages of useful recommendations and tips for students. Honestly, this book only covers about 750 characters comprehensively. The rest of it was little more than a character listing with pronunciation and a brief description. To add insult to injury, the book is Copyright 1999, not 2016! If one likes this style of book, then please consider Dr. Alan Hoenig's "Traditional Chinese Characters" instead:Traditional Chinese Characters: Learn & Remember 2,193 Character Meanings (An EZChinesey Guide)TLDR:Looking at Amazon's description, one is led to believe that it was published in 2016. However, only the cover was updated. This is a Revised Edition of a 1979 book, and was last updated and copyrighted 1999. I don't think ANY study text within has been updated since 1999. It is printed in Singapore. There are about 20 pages of good background material on the history, pronunciation, and recommended methodology for learning. The 214 traditional radicals are given a nice index inside the front cover. However, the rest of the book is pretty disappointing. There are 1062 character slots for "comprehensive" learning. However, most of the radicals are amongst the 1062. Other "unused" characters & "components" were also found amongst the 1062 characters, likely for education purposes. Explanations given for the "unused" characters were variations of "Not in modern use as an independent character." That leaves roughly about 750 characters that are comprehensively presented. An additional 1245 characters are presented with only a brief definition, pronunciation, with an occasional word usage example. (And even some of those 1245 are just radicals and unused components.)This may be a good textbook in conjunction with an instructor led course specifically using this material But for anyone looking for good self-study reference or guides, I honestly cannot see how it's of any great use. That being said, I did find the nineteen pages (from page 12-30) fairly useful.Pros:1. Very nice font and font size were used for the traditional characters; easy to see and study individual strokes within each character.2. There is a traditional Chinese radical index within the front cover; the index has pointers to each radical's comprehensive listing.3. There are some good Chinese character study tips and background; but it only lasts about 20 pages.4. If applicable, the "simplified" character version appears in the lower right of any traditional character listing.5. The cover looks nicely updated for 2016.Cons:1. The material within is copyrighted 1999, not 2016.2. Only about 750 characters are comprehensively shown.3. Only 9 slots were allocated for each character's stroke-order guide. If a character had more than nine strokes, then the stroke guide was consolidated (down to 9 steps).4. No English definition index is provided. One must know the exact number of (character) strokes or the PinYin pronunciation to find a character.5. Organization was not easy to follow.Bottom line - I CANNOT recommend this book for anyone seriously looking to study Chinese Traditional characters. A better book would be one from Dr. Alan Hoenig, Copyright 2013. "Traditional Chinese Characters". That book is not without faults. But it is a much more useful self-study and reference book for traditional Chinese characters.Traditional Chinese Characters: Learn & Remember 2,193 Character Meanings (An EZChinesey Guide)If one does not need this particular style of book... There are also free (PDF) books available for self-study, such as "Speak Mandarin in Five Hundred Words". A "1000" character version and others are also available. They are provided courtesy of the OCAC (Overseas Chinese Affairs Council) of Taiwan. Please ask if anyone needs pointers on how to find that or similar study materials.Thank you for clicking on the HELPFUL button below if you found any of this information useful. Feel free to post/ask any questions or comments as well. And THANK YOU for reading!
SO useful. I've started learning Mandarin and this has been an excellent reference; my tutor also flipped through it and pronounced it a good purchase. Especially helpful: it includes diagrams with the order of operations for strokes used in each character, and since I want to know how to properly write rather than just "drawing" characters, that's been great. You may or may not need something more extensive if you're already solid in writing skills, I have no idea; but if you're just starting out, it's perfect.
Very helpful for the Chinese class I'm taking that only teaches using Pinyin, or the phonetic spelling of Chinese words using English letters. You can look up 1000's pinyin words & simplified Chinese characters using their spelling or stroke order. Very handy. It gives you expanded definitions of characters, as well as examples of multiple uses of that character. And it shows you the correct stroke order for writing the characters yourself. This book is perfect if you're learning to read & write Chinese from scratch.
This book is an excellent tool for rapidly learning a large number of the characters in the Chinese language. The method of explaining the character's meaning, the contexts in which it is used, comparison to other characters, the stroke sequence, and all the other side information is very helpful. It has a large volume of useful information that is fed to you in an easily receivable way. Highly recommend!
The information in the book is good but the organization is poor. It's taking me longer than necessary to learn the most important radicals and words because the book doesn't put them in any particular order. They should have done a list of Radicals in the beginning, in order from most used to least used, and then the 1,200 words list, and then the 2,500, then 5,000. Radicals, A list B, list C, list and D list respectably. I lost a lot of study time just in trying to decide if a given word is something I need to know at the moment. A comprehensive well organized list would make my studies go by faster.I would also add that the lack of real page numbers in the kindle addition make finding content difficult. WE NEED REAL PAGE NUMBERS IN OUR BOOKS, GET ON IT AMAZON!
For this topic there are tons of books aiming to explain every character, and its composition. This book resulted to be great I searched on different books before going for this one, I entirely recommend this book. If you want even more detail, I would suggest getting Fun with Chinese Characters as it makes thorough explanations and even provides short cartoons for helping you associate thoughts.
This book arrived in an open unsealed package shipped with the USPS which is not the best method of shipment. I hope other means of shipment are offered in the future such as FedEx, UPS or DHL which offer good delivery service in my experiences. The Reading and Writing Chinese: A Comprehensive Guide...Traditional Characters Edition is a delightful learning and teaching book illustrating close to 5000 characters with stroke order, a Stroke Index, a Modern Radicals Chart and an Alphabetical Pinyin Index plus so much more. I am completely satisfied with the content of this book. It makes learning easier, more comprehensive and structured.
