I am a tiny bit obsessed with hand lettering, and this book basically made my lettering dreams come true. This book teaches you the basics of lettering, starting from the different types of letterings and continuing with botanical doodles that can decorate your writing. The book provides you with step by step instructions, but with plenty of room to bring your own creativity to your work. My favorite part of the book was that it included space to doodle and practice each step of the way. I can never get my script to look as pretty as I’d like, but this book provides guides to make things look as beautiful as I’d dreamed. This book is wonderful. I can’t recommend it enough- it is SUCH a great book.
As eye candy and inspiration this book is a five. There are a lot of designs that feel easy enough for beginners, yet fancy enough to be admired.So why 3/5 stars and not higher? I think I expected more detailed instructions and tips. There's little in the way of advice on how to make letters beyond "practice". No real hints on how to layout letters with floral motifs.So, while it's a pretty book that I'll definitely use for inspiration, I'd probably have gone for a different book had I been shopping in person instead of online.
This is a good book for someone who is interested in getting started with hand lettering. The author focuses mainly on floral patterns, but the 'botanical' tag is not representative of everything that this book includes. The author also incorporates more block lettering, and the idea of positive and negative space. Also included are blank pages, as well as pages with borders, which the hand letterer (you) are encouraged to play in. I appreciated that the author encouraged constant and focused practice in order to get better, and overall the ideas and suggestions provided were good. My one hitch with this book, is that it may be a little short/basic for those who are really into hand -lettering, but it seems perfect for a beginner or someone interested specifically in plant or plant influenced designs.
Not sure what the point of this book is... maybe for children... not very useful for learning basic calligraphy type hand lettering. It has cut outs, and drawing, basic alphabet writing (elementary level), and block lettering. And many many blank pages with nothing but some frilly flowers.
This book delivers on hand drawn flowers and botanical sketches. So if you are looking for inspiration on that you will find it here. I think it's nice that the ENTIRE book is handwritten and drawn. However this book seriously misses the mark on hand-lettering itself. Technique is poor and many look rather juvenile and sloppy. Overall still a nice book to have for floral inspiration but look elsewhere if you are searching for in depth help with hand lettering.
I love this book!! It is so fun. I am so glad that coloring books are all the rage these days because it really is a great way to let go of stress. This hand lettering workbook is fantastic! Learning the basics of how to start a drawing is essential to anyone with an itch to paint or draw and this is a great way to learn. It really helps you learn to draw from beginning to end. The practice pages were so fun and in some cases funny [ originals where definitely better then my attempt at them ]. This book was an absolute blast! Learning to do a variety of different things from plants to letters was just such a blast. Stop and smell the roses.
This a great book for anyone who likes to doodle, scrapbooking, making greeting cards or gift cards, or anything crafty. These designs can be reproduced and used on bulletin boards in offices or schools. There are 12 chapters that may inspire the doodler to learn the art of lettering with step-by-step instructions. With practice, the hand lettering will become your own. You will develop your own style and add to what you learn from this author. This book could also be used to help someone who has poor penmanship. Instructions are given for each letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case. There are practice pages or use tracing paper to help make an exact copy and practice until the technique is perfected. Once this skill has been accomplished the applications are endless.
I’ve taken a calligraphy class in the past and it’s very technical. My instructor was a perfectionist. She wanted every letter to be perfect. I love this book because it’s free form calligraphy with embellishments. I copied a couple of the designs and got my confidence up and started expanding on her designs and then started creating my own designs. This book is a great way to get your creative juices going. What a great personalized gift if you had the time to create a weekly planner, calendar or note cards. Though it’s not in color, I can only imagine how the author would do it. The next step for me is color.
